Formula and Logic
The calculator uses two core constraints to determine pallet capacity: physical volume (dimensions) and weight limits.
- Units per layer: Calculated by dividing the pallet’s length and width by the product’s length and width, then multiplying the two whole number results. This assumes products are stacked in a uniform grid with no rotation.
- Total layers: Available stack height (max total stack height minus pallet height) divided by product height, rounded down to the nearest whole number.
- Volume-based units per pallet: Units per layer multiplied by total layers.
- Weight-based units per pallet: Pallet maximum weight capacity divided by product weight, rounded down to the nearest whole number.
- Effective units per pallet: The lower value between volume-based and weight-based units, as you cannot exceed either limit.
- Total pallets needed: Total quantity to ship divided by effective units per pallet, rounded up to the nearest whole pallet.
- Utilization percentage: (Total product volume per pallet divided by available pallet volume) multiplied by 100.
