Deriving Operating Profit From Gross Profit Minus Operating Expenses (The Step Most Guides Skip)

Many top-ranking articles hand you the tidy formula (operating income ÷ revenue) but never show the bridge from gross profit. In practice, operating profit is what remains after subtracting all costs of running the business not directly tied to producing the unit sold.

That includes corporate salaries, software subscriptions, HQ rent, and non-capitalized R&D. Under GAAP and IFRS, depreciation is an operating cost for nearly all non-financial industries.   1. Pull net revenue from the top line—confirm unearned revenue excluded.
